Cue Stick Grooming, Cue Care Tips, How to Maintain a Pool Cue

The most important part of any hint is the hint. Your main concern should be how to keep their shape and hold up to chalk. The tip should never be soft or short of chalk!

1. The edge shall be machined within a dime to nickel radius. Scale is available with most instruments.

2. If it is not within the radius of a dime for a nickel, place a forge on the floor with the bowl side up.

3. Turn the stick upside down by placing the tip of the stick into the molding bowl.

4. Rotate the stick while rotating the stick back and forth. Be careful not to over sand and wear the tip too quickly. Remember, you are not sanding the tip, simply shaping it.

5. Use a tip and scuff tool on the leather tip to roughen and create deep holes for maximum chalk retention and better control of the ball.

6. Apply a small amount of wax to the outer edge of the tip and buff it. This helps prevent the tip from multiplying and will sharpen your vision regarding the tip of the stick and the ball.

Column maintenance

When the stick gets dirty or stuck, the shaft needs to be cleaned.

1. Using Wet/Dry #600 sandpaper, Scotch bright white pad or #0000 steel wool, clean shaft from ferrule, bottom 10-15 in.

2. Using a piece of brown paper, unpainted leather, or even a $20 bill, polish the shaft until it’s hot to the touch. This gives the shaft a polished look and feel, allowing the shaft to glide smoothly through your fingers without wearing a glove.

3. Another option is to apply a small amount of the air conditioner to the shaft it’s running on down into the shaft where you cleaned.

additional maintenance

1. To clean and polish the ferrule, use Pearl Drop dental polish with a damp cotton cloth and roll the ferrule back and forth in the cloth between your fingers.

2. Adding a drop of silicone, shaft treatment or graphite to the joint pin will reduce friction

3. Never apply water to any part of the wand.

Tips on protecting your investment

1. Do not leave the wand in extremely hot or cold areas. Doing so may deform the shaft.

2. Do not expose the stick to any moisture.

3. Make sure you always have a shock absorber at the rear end of your stick.
